Exploring San Francisco’s Finest Churches: Must-Visit Places of Worship in SF

San Francisco offers a diverse selection of churches, ranging from the historic Mission Dolores to the vibrant Glide Memorial Church. Whether you’re looking for a frequently visited church or seeking recommendations for attending a service, here are some notable options:

Grace Cathedral

Grace Cathedral is an impressive Episcopal cathedral and one of the largest in the United States. Located on Nob Hill, it offers a stunning view from its elevated position. Visitors can explore the cathedral throughout the day, before and after the regular services.

For those interested in attending a service, the most popular options are on Sunday mornings at 8:30 am and 11:30 am.

Address: 1100 California Street

Mission Dolores

The Mission Dolores holds the distinction of being the oldest standing building in San Francisco. This site offers traditional Catholic masses in its Basilica. English masses are typically held every Sunday morning at 8 am and 10 am, with a Spanish mass at noon.

After attending mass, I recommend taking the time to visit the Old Mission, where you’ll find breathtaking murals, as well as the adjacent cemetery.

Glide Memorial

Glide Memorial is not your average Methodist church. Renowned for its work with the homeless and underprivileged of San Francisco, Glide offers non-traditional services featuring stories from those they have assisted, along with uplifting messages and exceptional music (their chorus is truly remarkable).

Each service at Glide Memorial is packed, often with a line forming for the second service before the first one concludes. This church is a local favorite, with two Sunday services at 9 am and 11 am.

To secure a seat, it is advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the service.

Address: 330 Ellis Street (at Taylor)

Saints Peter and Paul Church

Saints Peter and Paul Church

Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church is another highly regarded option for attending a service in San Francisco. This church also welcomes visitors and holds a special place in history.

The steps of Saints Peter and Paul Church were the backdrop for Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe’s wedding photographs after their city hall ceremony. While DiMaggio married his first wife here, he was not allowed to remarry in the church.

Address: 666 Filbert Street in North Beach

St. Dominic’s Catholic Church

St. Dominic’s is an exquisite Catholic church, ranking among the beautiful churches in San Francisco. Completed in 1928, it is the fourth church to serve this parish. Many are unaware that it houses several prized statues and artwork.

Attend one of their Sunday services (7:30 am, 9:30 am & 11:30 am) for an opportunity to appreciate the intricate details within.
